COTTAGE holidays are my idea of heaven – no housework, nobody flushing the loo in the bathroom which is always interlinked with yours, no pressure to get up for breakfast before 9.3Oam and, best of all, space. Over the years, we have stayed in self-catering accommodation worldwide and, boy, does it vary.
What looks chocolate box in a brochure can turn out to be rundown. Pictures which give the impression of space were obviously taken with wide-angle lenses.
On the tip of the Hartland peninsular in north Devon, Downe Cottages live up to all their claims. Built out of stone and set in rolling countryside, they are within a short walk of the rugged coastline. They are toastily warm (another of my frequent complaints) and are amazingly equipped for those who don’t want to try the various pubs and restaurants in the area. Every bedroom has its own ensuite facilities. There are quaint fishing ports to wander, family attractions to visit and sandy beaches galore. Best of all there is peace, the sea, a warm welcome and real comfort.
